Interview With Artist Don Marquez

Interview With Artist Don Marquez

What’s your favorite medium to create pieces like artist?

Oil paint is my favorite medium.

How much sketching do you need before you start painting? The “Dracula’s Brides”, or “Monkey Attack”, are extremely detailed.

When working on a new concept like “Monkey Attack”, it’s not unusual for me to make many sketches. Sometimes I draw multiple sketches of the idea or elements when working on a new concept, such as “Monkey Attack.”

Many of your creations are based on classic horror and sci-fi films from the 1950s.

I wasn’t trying to be retro.

What’s missing from the current cinema that makes old films so memorable?

Horror is a broad genre. Horror is a vast genre.

Which book was your favourite as a child?

When I was young, I read a lot on pulp era stuff. Otis Albert Kline. Robert E. Howard. H.P. Lovecraft and compilation volumes by other authors were also very popular during the pulp era.

Which is more enjoyable, writing a story or painting a single piece?

Working on one painting is more enjoyable than working on multiple. Comic books are more satisfying as they contain more pieces.

How did Alien Pig Farm 3000 get started? Steve Niles is your friend?

Steve knew my work well because he had purchased a few paintings from me on eBay years ago. He recommended Tom Jane to purchase APF3000.

The illustrations for ALP 3000 include a lot of detail. These details are created by the writer or added as illustrations to the illustration.

Todd Farmer’s script helped me to visualize Papa Dad’s face.

ALP 3000 makes a reference to older horror films.

This is how I feel.

ALP 3000, and The Lost World are just a few of the books that you have worked on.

Nothing below APF 3,000. Retro Blast was also published once by Amryl Entertainment. The issue #4 of Tiger Woman was published previously. The Poison Belt was a Professor Challenger adaptation. There were also three issues of The Nostradamus Chronicles. The Tiger Woman issue 3 and 4 of Cartune Land, as well as issues 5 and 5 for Tiger Woman. 3D adaptation of Werewolf, an older TV series. Jungle Comics: Issues, odds and ends.

What is the process? Taking a script and giving it more than a written identity?

It is a time-consuming process to create a comic book. This results in me becoming completely immersed in the comic book’s creation.

How close were you to the creators/writers for creating the scenes and the book’s look?

I almost always write scripts. Todd Farmer was one of the few writers that I ever had contact with.

What can comic-book writers do to make it more difficult for illustrators?

It is difficult for writers to see the vision in their minds. He is visual in his story telling.

What are your recent projects?

My latest books are Window on the Weird Volume 1 and 2. I love to draw and paint individual pieces. You can order them from Cartune Land.
